Wine Fun Facts

Although it can not be determined which culture officially created this juice we now call wine, it has dotted the timeline of human existence roughly as far back as 10,000 years. Since there were no modern means to prevent spoilage during wine's infancy, it was often flavored with herbs and other substances to hide the unpleasant flavor which often developed. It can be said that the Roman empire had the greatest impact on the history of wine ranging from the cultivation of the grapes to the production and preservation of the wine itself. Barrels were created for storing and shipping wine and during this time bottles were used for the first time. After the fall of the Roman Empire (approx 410AD - 500AD), Europe slipped into what is called the "Dark Ages". During this time, the Catholic Church is unofficially credited with preserving the culture of wine making and and the cultivation of the grape. The history of wine continued along until the late 18th century where the industry began to mature. Major wine regions started to become established and as the industrial revolution began (19th century), machinery took center stage in the production of wine.
